- Settling or cracking near the top or bottom of a slope — a driveway, patio, or walkway that's cracking where it meets a graded area is often a sign the soil beneath it is shifting.
- Water pooling against your foundation — a slope that channels water toward the house instead of away from it is a drainage and grading problem a retaining wall can help solve.
- A yard you can't actually use — if the slope is too steep to mow, plant, or walk comfortably, a terraced retaining wall system can turn unusable grade into flat, functional space.
Why so many older Hoover retaining walls fail
If you already have a retaining wall that's bowing, cracking, or visibly leaning, the cause is almost always the same: inadequate drainage. Soil holds a surprising amount of water, and after Alabama's heavy spring rains, saturated clay soil behind a wall creates real hydrostatic pressure. Without a way for that water to escape — gravel backfill, a perforated drain line, and weep holes through the wall face — the pressure builds until the wall bows outward or fails outright.
A lot of older walls in Hoover's established neighborhoods were built as stacked block with little or no drainage behind them, because they looked fine on a dry day when they went in. When does a Hoover retaining wall need a permit?
As a general rule, retaining walls over 4 feet in height — measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall — require a building permit from the City of Hoover, and often need engineered plans stamped by a structural engineer. Even shorter walls can require engineering if they're supporting a surcharge above them, like a driveway, patio, or parked vehicles.
